A valiant inaugural assault on the TransVirginia route that ended in humbling fashion. We couldn't get as far as we hoped in the limited time we had. The route was more rugged than anticipated and our pandemic-year fitness level was not optimal. After getting worn down by a 70+ mile day with over 7,300' of vertical gain, we got slowed down by a day of nigh-unbikeable terrain. So instead of making it to Roanoke over a long weekend, we pulled the plug and rented a car in Weyers Cave. It was a beautiful ride and a great adventure. Next time we'll be more prepared!
Taking the metro to the end of the line so we can get to the mountains and wilderness sooner!
After 20 miles on the W&OD bike path, we stayed at a hotel that the birds liked too!
