Day Twelve: Galapagos - Santa Cruz Island - El Chato Reserve

We took a 40-mile boat ride from Isabela to Santa Cruz, passing Tortuga and its bird colonies along the way. Then kayaking and snorkeling around Divine Bay and Punta Estrada before heading up to the upper part of Santa Cruz to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat at El Chato Reserve!

Meeting a giant tortoise at El Chato Reserve

IMGP9502.jpg

When startled or concerned, giant tortoises retreat into their shell with a hissing sound (air is exhaled from their lungs to make enough room for their body to fit inside the shell).

IMGP9504.jpg

They must be nearby, this looks fresh! Tortoises don't do much digestion so they have to eat all day long.

IMGP9506.jpg

Black raspberries grow everywhere. Most weren't ripe enough to eat but the prickers were just right for grabbing at us as we walked past.
