A great weekend on the Eastern Shore

We toured the Dogfish Head Brewery, stopped in Rehoboth Beach, visited the animals at the Salisbury Zoo, Walked on Assateague Island, and explored Berlin. All in all, it was a fantastic getaway!

IMG_1301.jpg

We had a great visit to the Dogfish Head brewery

IMG_1300.jpg

This is where they make some of our favorite beer!

IMG_1272.jpg

Early stages of Dogfish Head beer, where the dort is boiled. (We think)

IMG_1275.jpg

Beautiful tanks, some made of Palo Santo wood from Paraguay.

IMG_1280.jpg

IMG_1283.jpg

Malt ready to be added to beer

IMG_1289.jpg

We really wanted to go up in this treehouse sculpture but, alas, it is only open to employees.

IMG_1291.jpg

Giselle gave an impromptu breakdancing demonstration

IMG_1303.jpg

Next we went to Dogfish Head's original brewpub, where it all started.

IMG_1307.jpg

IMG_2066.jpg

We stayed here in Rehoboth Beach

IMG_2063.jpg

We took a walk on the beach before leaving town.

IMG_2064.jpg

It was a beautiful, if cold, walk

IMG_2065.jpg

A bit of ice was still on the beach.

IMG_2072.jpg

We stopped for lunch at one of our favorite discoveries from years past: Jimmy's Grille

IMG_2069.jpg

Wow, what a great picture!

IMG_1386.jpg

Then we stopped at the Salisbury Zoo.

IMG_1421.jpg

IMG_1310.jpg

Colorful despite the cold

IMG_1325.jpg

Someone was spreading his wings.

IMG_1329.jpg

And other somebodies were thirsty.

IMG_1336.jpg

Struttin'

IMG_1346.jpg

This peacock kept pecking at the ice. We weren't sure if there was something good embedded in it, or he was trying to threaten his reflection. Maybe both.

IMG_1353.jpg

Chatting with the guests

IMG_1361.jpg

This rhea was fairly curious about why we would venture out on such a cold day.

IMG_1362.jpg

Bison

IMG_1363.jpg

A happy cavy

IMG_1379.jpg

Cavy close up.

IMG_1384.jpg

Cavortin' Cavies.

IMG_1373.jpg

A watchful burrowing owl

IMG_1407.jpg

Ever vigilant.

IMG_1387.jpg

This spectacled owl was trying to hide from us.

IMG_1415.jpg

And we were apparently disturbing the screech owl's beauty rest.

IMG_1397.jpg

Poor llamas. No matter how smart they are, when they make this expression they look a bit slow.

IMG_1417.jpg

Something riled this wolf up and he got the whole pack howling.

IMG_1418.jpg

Feeling a bit sheepish with his tail between his legs when the alert turned out to be a false alarm.

IMG_2073.jpg

Can you hang upside-down like a sloth?

IMG_2074.jpg

Giselle can!

IMG_1430.jpg

In Berlin, the town closest to Assateague, we stayed at the Hotel Atlantic

IMG_1432.jpg

The hotel is a beautiful and well-preserved landmark

IMG_1422.jpg

Our room

IMG_1424.jpg

Giselle, perched on the bed. The bed was so high up, it came with a stepstool to help you climb up!

IMG_1433.jpg

And next to the hotel, we were surprised to find Santa's house--which was smaller than we had expected.

IMG_1434.jpg

We had brunch at the Globe, a theater turned into a restaurant.

IMG_1435.jpg

Our rental car next to the new recycling bins at Assateague

IMG_1436.jpg

Giselle, pretending to throw a temper tantrum because we kept forgetting things in the car

IMG_1438.jpg

Someone was following us!

IMG_1442.jpg

The beach was beautiful!

IMG_1444.jpg

No flipflop prints in January

IMG_1448.jpg

It's just like August. But colder.

IMG_1449.jpg

IMG_1452.jpg

Watch out for hunters!

IMG_1453.jpg

One of the backcountry campsites that we could hike to in the summer, if we wanted a long hot hike on the beach with all our stuff followed by camping in a bug-infested swamp :(

IMG_1455.jpg

But the backcountry IS beautiful

IMG_1456.jpg

IMG_1463.jpg

The ponies like it there

IMG_1464.jpg

IMG_1465.jpg

IMG_1469.jpg

Bill wanted to play with some toys we found.

IMG_1475.jpg

IMG_1480.jpg

IMG_1481.jpg

Maybe we'd better wait until the next restroom, this one looks a little off balance.

IMG_1482.jpg

This heron was fishing but we were crimping its style so we moved on.

IMG_1485.jpg

The cutest pony we saw all weekend!

IMG_1487.jpg

Grazing.

IMG_1489.jpg

These are the campsites we'll have in July

IMG_1490.jpg

another view

IMG_1492.jpg

Another walk on the bayside.

IMG_1496.jpg

IMG_1501.jpg

Monday was cloudy but still beautiful

IMG_1505.jpg

It was just a tad too cold for a long walk, though

IMG_1506.jpg

Another view of our future campsites. We can't wait!

IMG_2078.jpg

IMG_2079.jpg

We found this tag on the beach, which we later learned was part of a project to tag and track horseshoe crabs. We sent in the info to the Fish and Wildlife Service and hopefully they'll tell us the history of the crab it was once attached to.
