Driving to Death Valley

After our return to the mainland from the Channel Islands, we set off for Death Valley. We had a beautiful drive to Stovepipe Wells to visit the ranger station and get our first taste of sweltering heat, then headed into the higher elevations to get to our campsite.

They're hard to see, but there are hundreds of enormous windmills out there.

Stovepipe Wells is where we went to pay the visitor fee. It's also at sea level. And quite hot.

We were very glad to have a 4x4 to get us up the steep hills.
