Pudong and the Bund

We set out on a cloudy morning to look at the colonial architecture of the Bund and the ultra-modern vertical sprawl of skyscrapers across the river in Pudong. After a few hours in the Shanghai History Museum, the sun broke through and we had another beautiful clear day in Shanghai!

These japanese tourists grabbed Bill and wanted their picture taken with him. Not sure why.

They couldn't figure out why we'd want a picture of THEM.

Rather than take the subway across the river to Pudong, we took the indescribably odd "Bund Sightseeing Tunnel." It's like an airport tram but weirder.

The Oriental Pearl Tower complex.

Looking up at the Oriental Pearl Tower. This 1,535 foot tall television tower has numerous observation decks and is the third-tallest tower in the world. We didn't go up to the top, instead we went to the basement, which houses the Shanghai History Museum.

entering the complex, we were greeted by a sign celebrating the Olympics and a brass band.

The woman playing the cymbals couldn't stop laughing.

model of a gas station. We know it's just a model because the sign (not in the photo) let us know that it was just a model. it said it was to scale, but the matchbox cars look suspiciously small next to the gas pump.

Across the river you can see (from left to right) the Oriental Pearl, the Jin Mao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center. The Jin Mao Tower is 1,380 feet tall and was the tallest building in China until the Shanghai World Financial Center (still under construction) eclipsed it at 1,614 feet. The Shanghai Grand Hyatt Hotel occupies floors 53 to 87 of the Jin Mao Tower. On a clear day it must be an exceptional view from those rooms!
