From the Top of Europe to the bottom of the valley



We decided we'd been slacking off enough. It was time to conquer the highest peak around: Jungfrau. We took the train to Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe and rode an elevator to the "Sphinx," an enclosed observatory closer to the peak. From there we walked outside onto the glaciers, walked to the Mönchsjochhütte, took lots of pictures, then went back into the mountain. We walked through the "ice palace," a series of tunnels made entirely of ice and filled with ice sculptures, then ran to the train and went partway down the mountain.

At Eigergletscher (literally: Eiger glacier) we walked from the foot of the enormous glacier, all the way down to the foot of the valley below Wengen to Trümmelbäch Falls, where all the runoff from the glaciers churns its way through rock and down the valley walls. It was quite impressive, although not very photogenic. The signs interestingly noted that more water flows through the falls per second than all beer consumed during Oktoberfest!

Giselle wanted to walk back up the "hill" to Wengen but Bill wimped out and insisted that we ride the train back up.
